MULTISECTORAL PLANNING FOR NUTRITION: Developing an Indicator Matrix for Nutrition

Multisectoral nutrition planning seeks to enable relevant sectors and actors to better coordinate and harmonise their policies and plans around addressing malnutrition. Development of an indicator matrix is vital to the development and monitoring of a responsive and effective multisectoral nutrition plan (MSNP). The indicator matrix template is an illustrative framework for a transparent and accountable mechanism to track and measure progress using action-oriented, measurable indicators for improved nutrition.

The Indicator Matrix tab lists nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive output, outcome, and impact indicators drawing on global commitments, evidence and widely used measures of nutrition actions. Each country, however, presents a unique context, and alignment with national priorities and goals drive what nutrition actions should be in the MSNP, which in turn, determines what indicators should be used for effective tracking, management and optimal mobilisation, allocation and use of resources, and the making of timely decisions to resolve constraints. This should be seen as an illustrative template, to which indicators can be added and from which indicators can be selected for use, as relevant.
