MULTISECTORAL PLANNING FOR NUTRITION: Conducting a Policy Framework Mapping and Analysis

In order to lay the landscape for developing a multisectoral plan to improve nutrition, an in-depth examination of the existing level of nutrition-related engagement and policy in a given country must be conducted. This policy framework mapping and analysis tool provides guidance and related templates for conducting an analysis of existing policies as they relate to improving nutrition. It draws upon the Global Nutrition Targets for 2025 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and a related set of recommended interventions for nutrition-sensitive policies and programming and is designed to function as a guide rather than a strict procedure, as its application will likely vary across countries and contexts.

This tool comprises three key steps for conducting a multisectoral nutrition policy analysis: (i) identification of relevant policies; (ii) analysis and mapping of the policy frameworks for alignment with global best practices in nutrition; and (iii) utilisation of the information gained from the analysis and mapping.
